Director of Music

Michael Pettry

Send Email

Michael Pettry, Director of Music, has served at Plainfield United Methodist Church since 2004. His tenure at the church includes creation of a community concert series, newly commissioned musical works and international debuts, renovation of the chancel space to accommodate a wide array of musical styles, and installation of the new, 4-manual, 49-rank pipe organ.

Music plays a special role in worship and overall lifestyle at Plainfield United Methodist Church. Ensembles at PUMC include the 40-voice Adult Choir, the Summer Chorus (which sings lighter music from June through August), the Praise Team, three mixed-generation bell choirs, bi-annual festival or chests, the Summer Instrumental Consort, a Gospel Quartet, a Mixed Quartet, and the Chancel Octet focusing on early-music and contemporary repertoire for advanced singers. Further, Pettry oversees creative elements of worship outside of music including visual and performing arts, creative and innovative engagement tools, and weekly scholarly research to broaden the congregation’s understanding of music and worship.

A congregation with a “commitment to serving to children of Plainfield,” the Plainfield United Methodist Church building is available for children/youth concerts and recitals at no charge. It is our goal to be a space for the community to gather, creating music and building meaningful relationships through the arts.

Completed in 2016, the sanctuary pipe organ is a 4-manual, 49-rank instrument built by Reynolds and Associates. With a tonal design nodding to the musical genius of E. M. Skinner and the symphonic sound, the instrument leads weekly worship at three Classic Worship services in the sanctuary. The sanctuary also includes a 7-foot Kawaii grand piano. Piano and pipe organ lessons are offered through the church.

Beyond Plainfield United Methodist Church, Pettry also serves as the Executive Director of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Founded in 1937, the 200-voice chorus reaches more than 30,000 persons annually through performances, educational initiatives, radio and television broadcasts (PBS), a diverse discography including the recent release of Zabur on the Naxos music label. Further, he has presented domestic and international concert tours, and produced at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Pettry holds a Bachelor of Music degree in pipe organ performance from Ball State University, and the Master of Music from Butler University. He serves as guest lecturer at Butler University. He has presented at national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, Chorus America and Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, is a panelist for the Indiana Arts Commission, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Indianapolis Consortium of Arts Administrators. He was named a 2015 Creative Renewal Fellow by the Arts Council of Indianapolis to travel the United States and France exploring notable pipe organs and cathedrals, and was named to the Stanley K. Lacy Class XLI in 2016.
